  • Use midi to style program supplied by yamaha

It is possible to use MIDI to Style App of Yamaha to create a style from an imported MIDI file. It is also possible to tweak this style for the various parts. Is it a good idea to make a separate option at the style when it was created by this App. You can make very good styles using this App and it is very easy to use even for beginners and the outcome lets you see the various parts in the Style. It works on Genos an Genos 2, not sure if it work on any other keyboards.
Thanks for any feedback

RudyVriendts Yeah It is a great step in the right direction and my dream style creator would probably look something like that. I haven't used it that much, but I think its biggest drawback is that it is too dumbed down. It is solely oriented on the beginners and doesn't allow you to do enough tweaking and fine tuning to produce exactly what you want. It is a black box that you have little control over which sometimes produces amazing results, sometimes not. I would use that program's approach as a starting point and tried to enhance it.

if someone used that software enough would be great to hear about your experience with it - what do you like about it and in what areas is it lacking.

    Thanks.

I've been using the free midi to style app (on a PC) with a PRS SX600 for a while and with a bit of tweaking you can get some half decent results. You just have to make sure that the correct voice list for your keyboard is loaded into the app before you start. It supports GENOS 1+2, SX900, 700, 600 and I assume the SX920 and SX720 (I don't have the voice list for these).
In 'Easy' mode things can get a bit 'hit and miss' as the app 'guesses' at the correct parts and settings but if you go into edit mode then you can select which sections of the loaded midi file you want for Intros, mains, fills, ends etc. and also set the volumes for Rhy 1, Rhy 2, Bass, Chords, Pads etc. It also allows you to hear the style through your keyboard (if you have it connected via USB) or through the supplied 'sound font' (if using it on a standalone PC). I couldn't find any support for OTS but Hey, this is a freebie app.
I have created a few styles for Hymns from midi files (I play in a church music group) and they sound OK.
The obvious question is that if you have the complete midi file of a song, why not just mute the midi channels that you want to play on the keys and just play along with the midi file instead of chopping it into 'loops'? Answer, because that's no fun!😂
A user guide is also available to download off the Yamaha website.

Casper has made a few tutorials for using Midi Song to Style. Here is the introduction video.

In Easy mode I didn't find it useful but I had difficulties managing it in Edit mode before watching Casper's videos. I want to try it using markers I place in the midi, but haven't got around to doing that yet.

I made an instrument list for my SX720

aprilla Yeah a great tutorial and a great channel. After seeing what Midi Song to Style can do in advanced mode it is not as dumbed down as I thought. I hope they keep improving it.
I haven't got a chance to really use it to understand all its drawbacks and weaknesses, maybe someone who have been using it can share what they think about this software and what it is missing to become the go to program for creating styles. Would be great if we can just attempt to correct those drawbacks instead of trying to create a new style creator from scratch. I feel like Midi Song to Style should be 90% there.

Styleworks Universal does Yamaha, korg, roland, gem, but the creator died so getting a new activation key isthe issue. I bought it years ago and still use it but it cannot be reloaded without the key.

What a great idea, I'll try that. Thanks

So true!! We'll do it the hard way every time 🤣
