Would it be possible in the future to have the ability to use the Live Preview Function to audition a style before uploading.

For example

  • style collection ison PC
  • using Style Player to pick a collection of styles that maybe suitable ( lets say 20 files)
  • these files then show on the Style Uploard page as they do now

when you click on one of the files in the set you are taken to the Live Preview function where you could preview the various parts of the file on the attacked midi connected keyboard and decide if thats the one you want to send.

I realize that currently the Live Preview doesnt support all models.

J Bran Hm I would argue that if you don't know what style this is it's probably not worth sharing. Adding low quality styles to the collection is only lowering its overall value.
If you have a lot of styles on your PC you never tried maybe you can upload them to your keyboard first, see how they play and feel, and then upload a few that you enjoyed.

    Thanks for the response .

Yes it could be done that way but what i suggest is much more effectient than leaning over your keyboard using a poorly designed edit interface pecking at a touch screen . While a touch screen is great it is still not as ergonomic a mouse and big screen.

If i used keyboard audtion approach i would
-1 find a group of files
-2 put them on a usb stick
    -3 transfer to keyboard
-4 audition style using varius buttons on the board
-5 highlight somehow the ones you wanted or didnt want ( you can only bookmark if you uses User Drive)

    • 6 transfer to the USB
    • 7 delete previously transfered file from the keyboard
    • 8 go back to PC load theUSB stick
    • 9 go to StylePlayer navigate to Upload and find and load directory.
      -10 up load

If I use Live Play audtion i would
-1 find a group of files
-4 audition styles using mouse with Live Play that are in the folder for upload
    -9 upload

This approach could also be used for general style audutioning from the PC as well and not for just uploading to Style Player. I have not found a style player app for PC that provide sound quality and auditioning controls that Live Preview has provides.

      110%
I've not met anything as good for auditioning styles as the live preview here, it has ruined all other methods for me.

I see. Yeah maybe on our upload form once you selected the files we can show a transfer/preview buttons, so it will serve as a double purpose - you can preview what you are uploading, and if you like you can use it for private style preview/transfers of your collection (by choosing not to continue with uploading after the preview).

If people started using it like that would it cause any issues?

I seldom audition folders of styles for myself anymore, I have a lot so it's both daunting and confusing. So I have never auditioned for the site either (except once but that was a request). But if I was using the Live Preview I could be auditioning for myself and for the site at the same time. Interesting.

      This would be perfect.
I have fallen into the Style Rabbit Hole having many many styles even after removing duplicates.
The only way to find the gems is audition each and catrgorize into folders on the PC for transfer to the site or my keyboard.
Live Preview would make this process even more enjoyable .
I look forward to the evolution . As I said earier your Live Preview programing is superior to anything i have tried over the years.

      Thanks JimB

I'd worry a bit that using the Live Preview this way might cause server issues? If it worked and it was liked there might be more styles, but also possibly more users, so more activity.
Restricting it to xx users at any time might help, I see a lot of the ai manipulators do this. But it's frustrating for the user to get that message too often, off-putting and not inviting.

Could there be a second Live Preview for this type of auditioning so it didn't interfere with the rest of the users? Listening to a folder of files, and all that goes with it, could take a bit of time.
Or could members have their own local Live Preview linked to your uploads so the info is still in order, but they're not putting much of a load on the server?

aprilla Preview itself shouldn't be server intensive as it's performed client side in a browser without hitting the server, but the upload form is hitting the server a few times to check for duplicates and such. Don't think it would become such a popular feature to cause load issues on its own, but you are right it's something worth taking into account.

I was just reading through your posts again and wondering if this is how you usually audit styles?
It's pretty much what I do too, but it's really not satisfactory. I have a ridiculous number of styles, which is nice but a nightmare for auditioning. I'm newly back to playing keyboard so it's like starting fresh with a mountain in front of me!

Folder by folder doesn't necessarily show all the styles for a song title, so just listening through that folder might get rid of any bad/unwanted/unknown that are there but it still leaves files that should be compared to the same titles maybe in another folder(s) not yet auditioned. So it seems feels like a never ending load-unload-load again situation with no actual progress made. It's not fun.

I tried JJazzLab for auditioning and thought I got it to let me audition a folder of my Yamaha styles, playing/hearing chord changes from my keyboard. But then whatever I did I lost how it happened and I've not been able to repeat it.

I as well have too many styles. Everytime i see a new zip I down load it. This resulted in an embrassing amount of data.
I am a guitar player and use the keyboard for backing tracks. I do enjoy auditing files but still stuggle finding a style from what i have collected for specific backing track i want to make .

Yes this is the basic approach i use to audit styles. I always transfer the folder i am auditing on to the USER drive folder on my PSR. I do this because the User drive allows you to bookmark a Style with a yellow flag next to the Style ( PSR SX 900). This allows you to go through the folder and bookmark the good ones as you go then quickly go back and select the ones you like for saving else where. This saves time since you dont have to copy them out as you find them.

I also use the free styles data base program by Peter Weirzba from the PSR Tutorial Site. This gets rid of all the duplicates and also give more information about a style. I would like to see some one come up with an option that reads styles groups them with similar structues. Band In A Box does this.
AI should be able to read multiple style and then group them by ryhtm section ( Drums and Bass) . For me

I find Gig Styles easier to deal with because they are named after a song.

I have used Jjazz Lab as well with a USB cable to drive the sound card on the my keyboard . This works well, the sound is fairly good but not as good a Style Player Live Preview function which sounds same as loading style on the keyboard.

That's handy (using the favourites that way), and not something I thought to do, so thanks. It still means doing all that transferring but I'll try it and see if helps a bit.

I'll always hope for a song specific style too, which is probably how I got into this too many styles dilemma in the first place. It would be nice to have just a few options per song but when it goes to 20 or more, auditioning gets to be not so much fun. The Styles Database helps a bit for organising but there's nothing like playing them to really decide, for me. I also use the Anti-Twin program, it helps me identify duplicate styles when yet another folder offers itself for download and I don't even try to resist LOL

Thanks for sharing your method 👍
